Navigate 3 - LMS Reporting

Answer: What are the options for grade reporting? Are there various levels? Which levels remain most valuable for the online instructor in regard to student performance?

I shared in a previous post that I had selected Google Classroom as my chosen LMS. This was because my district is a Google Apps for Education (now called GSuite for Education) district. However, for these last two activities in Navigate, I decided to try out Moodle as well. (Not the best experience, by the way... Information overload).

In a pre-populated teacher demo, and walked through a list of things you can do as a teacher. There were several features I thought would be useful (once I eventually learn to use them) such as establishing and assessing course competencies as well as checking for student progress by looking at activities completed.

These are two features that I believe would prove very helpful in my standards-based, blended classroom. I really liked the idea of being able to define "competencies" for my students that align with my standards and my learning objectives and then being able to generate reports on students' level of mastery/competency.

I also liked being able to get an "at a glance" view of students' progression through the course by seeing assignments/activities completed (see screenshot below).

I also explored an option of assessing grades on a quiz. This report allowed the teacher to filter by users who have or have not completed the quiz, as well as options to filter by overdue, incomplete, etc. A data table was produced showing individual student data, as well as a class average. This information was followed by a bar graph that visually showed a breakdown of score ranges.

As I looked at these demo items, I believe that all of them could be helpful once a person learns to use the program. Moodle is something that I used as a student in my undergrad studies, and although I loved it then, I had no idea how difficult it is to use on the teacher side!

So, there are multiple options for grade reporting in terms of the format of the grade report and the data that is pulled for that report. Generally it is by course and then by student, followed by other specific parameters. Other reports about time spent online, etc are also available.

To me, the reports that show progression through the course content would be very valuable when paired with reports on time spent in each module/assignment. These factors together would shed more light on a students' progress than an average alone. These are principles that I'm applying even now in my blended classroom.
